The world’s largest password collection has been posted on a prominent hacker forum. The author claimed that the text file he provided contains 82 billion passwords, but tests show that the actual number of passwords is almost 10 times smaller at 8,459,060,239 unique entries.

Martin Jartelius, CSO at Outpost24, commented: “This will be a good time for anyone that knows and with a string of bad consciousness, that they reused passwords in different platforms to change them wherever the reuse may have occurred. Commonly, those lists are used both to generate lists of top passwords to try first when guessing, but also in what is called credentials stuffing attacks, i.e. testing the set of username and password you used at one site against any other sites the attacker finds interesting.”
